Voices Raised for “Fly Nigeria Act”

by zak chahal Saturday, January 08, 2011
According to Daily Independent News, stakeholders in Nigeria are asking the National Assembly to pass ‘Fly Nigeria Act’ in order to ensure that government officials patronize Nigerian carriers while travelling outside the country. At present, Nigeria is one of the strongest and biggest markets for aviation in Africa and top airlines including British Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates, Delta Airline, Air France and many International airlines offer flights to Lagos, the capital of Nigeria. Also many regional carriers are operating flights to Abuja, a business hub of Nigeria.

Head, Research and Corporate Travel, Olumide Ohunayo, a former president of the National Association Cabin Crew Association (NACCA), said that National Assembly should pass the “Fly Nigeria Act” to compel officials to use Nigerian airlines while addressing to journalists in Lagos.
He also added that Nigerian Government should address to encourage domestic airlines and ensure that they survive the competition created by international carriers. According to him,

“The government needs to keep the critical public travel expenditure with our carriers by passing ‘The Fly Nigeria Act”.

At present, the only Nigerian airline serving on the African routes in the International Aviation market is Arik Airways. Arik (W3) offers direct flights to Nigeria from International airports including flights from London Heathrow, UK. Also, Arik Air is flying at the local / domestic routes within Nigeria. The airline is a success and reckoned among the fastest growing airlines of the world.
